Szymon Krofey – Kaszuba from Dąbie.

The meeting with Piotr Dziekanowski, former editor-in-chief of the local weekly “Kurier Bytowski”, took place at the Municipal Library in Bytów. The theme of his presentation was: “Szymon Krofey – a Kashubian from Dąbie, author of religious texts for Kashubians”. The event was co-organized by the Bytowski Branch of the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association. The researcher of the famous clergyman from Bytów briefly outlined the development and education of the 16th-century clergyman. Piotr Dziekanowski talked about his latest discoveries, which should ultimately be included in a book. The author’s desire is to publish such a work on the occasion of the round anniversary of granting city rights to Bytów (in 2026). The listeners learned not only about the places where Szymon Krofey visited, studied, worked, and lived. An interesting fact was, for example, detailed descriptions of his daily schedule during his studies, as well as his role upon his return to Bytów in 1569, when he took the position of city clerk, teacher, and second preacher. Only 10 years later did Szymon Krofey assume the role of the first preacher. Today, his activities can be associated with translating the catechism from German into Kashubian, which is like a combination of Polish with elements of Kashubian. Piotr Dziekanowski dissected the etymology of some words, including the origin of the surname Krofey in various spellings and versions. It is not just about the final letter “y” or “j”, that is Krofey or Krofej. But also: Krofei – Korfei – Caruei – Kraffei. The almost two-hour meeting of Kashubian history enthusiasts was just an introduction to getting to know the historical figure better. Piotr Dziekanowski announced further research using new leads. We will eagerly await further insights into the life of Szymon Krofey.
