On January 19, 2010, at the City Hall in Myszków, a ceremony was held to award prizes to the winners and participants of the “Collecting Used Batteries” competition. After reading the summary of the competition, presenting the winners, the organizer of the competition, Mayor of Myszków, Janusz Romaniuk, awarded the laureates.
For winning in the preschool category, Preschool No. 5 received a prize: a Samsung LCD TV. For winning in the primary school category, Primary School No. 7 received a “Tajfun – hobby” table tennis set. In the junior high school category, Junior High School No. 1 from Public School Complex No. 1 won and received a set of educational tools for the physics laboratory.
Additionally, all other participants of the competition received prizes for taking part in the competition. Primary schools received: an LG DVD, a set of educational boards entitled “World Cleaning – Recycling” and a natural science set “Polish Nature”; junior high schools: an LG DVD, sets of books and a natural science set “Polish Nature”; preschools: sets of toys and books and a complete set of educational boards “Ecology in everyday life”.
The prizes were funded by the Mayor of Myszków from the Municipal and Communal Fund in the amount of around 900 PLN – each main prize and around 600 PLN – each prize for participating in the competition. The total value of all prizes amounted to 13,000.00 PLN.
Once again, the ecological competition announced for children and youth from primary schools, junior high schools, and preschools in the area of Myszków was met with great interest, especially with the involvement of students and their guardians. Over the 7-month duration of the competition (from 01.03.2009 to 09.30.2009), children and youth collected over 1,300 kg of used batteries (exactly 1316.01 kg), which means that a large amount of harmful waste did not burden municipal landfills, will not contribute to the creation of “wild dumps”, and will not have a negative impact on our environment. Furthermore, all collected waste will be handed over to the Recovery Organization REBA for recycling.
Comparing the amount of segregated used batteries from the stream of municipal waste in relation to the previous year (in the 2006 competition, 524kg were collected; 2007 – 767.5kg; 2008 – 896.46 kg), it can be concluded that the ecological awareness of our residents, especially children and youth, is increasing.
